13th November 2014
For the start of the new season we were entertained by Richard Blakey of Yorkshire and England.
Our chairman Jim Collins could not attend our opening dinner of the 2014/15 series as he was on a Mediterranean cruise and he will be sorry to hear he missed a real treat! Over the years we've had some genuinely funny speakers but Richard Blakey was up there with the best. With our president Bill Thompson deputising as master of ceremonies, the former Yorkshire and England wicketkeeper/batsman had the 37 diners in stitches in recounting tales from his 22-year career - not least when he produced a mask and wig to 'replicate' teammate Steve Kirby in the 2001 championship-winning team. Not requiring a mic, Richard dressed up his tales by bounding around the floor and engaged in audience-participation by shaking members' hands as if they were the 'new boy' in the dressing room plus conducting a poll of those for and against Kevin Pietersen playing for England.
Some of us recalled Richard as entertaining when he first visited the Society in 1998 and he's certainly honed his act to guarantee he'll be very much in demand on the speaking circuit.
Even though there were only 38 present, a good atmosphere was created on account of temporarily dispensing with a top table and having four round tables strategically placed to fill in the gap noticeable in normal circumstances.
A great night was had by all and many thanks to the Queens once again for an excellent meal.
